Description
The Sony α7R VI marks a decisive turning point in the α7R lineup. Equipped with the first fully stacked Exmor RS full-frame sensor in the series, it delivers 66.8 megapixels of resolution with readout speeds up to 5.6 times faster than its predecessor. The new BIONZ XR2 processing engine, featuring a dedicated artificial intelligence processing unit, handles up to 60 focus and exposure calculations per second while maintaining continuous shooting with no viewfinder blackout.
Resolution and Image Quality
The 66.8-megapixel resolution renders fine detail with exceptional precision, whether shooting landscapes, portraits, or wildlife. Dynamic range reaches up to 16 stops at low sensitivity, covering the full ISO range from 100 to 32,000 with controlled noise, including in nighttime scenes.
The camera integrates a visible and infrared light sensor paired with deep learning-based illumination estimation, delivering stable and accurate auto white balance in all lighting conditions. The Dynamic Range Optimizer, extended to level 8, automatically balances bright and dark areas for natural-looking portraits even in strong backlit situations.
The in-body stabilization reaches 8.5 stops at the center and 7.0 stops at the periphery, preserving sharpness at full resolution and effectively compensating for camera shake with telephoto lenses.
Extended RAW Formats
Several composite shooting modes enrich the RAW workflow: Pixel Shift Multi Shooting produces images of extremely high resolution, Noise Reduction Shooting generates files with minimal noise levels, and HDR Shooting extends dynamic range beyond the limits of a single exposure. Deep learning-based Extended RAW processing can furthermore quadruple the pixel count of captured images to approximately 270 megapixels, or apply full-resolution noise reduction.
Speed and Subject Tracking
30 Frames Per Second at Full Resolution
Continuous shooting reaches 30 frames per second at 66.8 megapixels with continuous focus and exposure tracking, and no viewfinder blackout. The buffer accommodates up to 215 JPEG images or 65 compressed RAW files continuously, thanks to CFexpress Type A card support.
The Pre-Capture function records images up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed, ensuring the decisive moment is captured even when it occurs unpredictably. A customizable button also allows temporarily increasing the burst rate mid-sequence, for example from 10 to 30 frames per second as a key moment approaches.
AI-Powered Subject Recognition
The α7R VI relies on the latest generation of human pose estimation for precise tracking in complex situations: grouped subjects, distant subjects, or subjects partially out of frame. Recognition covers humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains, and aircraft, with an automatic subject type detection option.
759 phase-detection autofocus points cover approximately 94% of the sensor surface. Autofocus operates reliably in extremely low-light conditions, down to very low light levels through the Brightness Control function. The spot focus area is adjustable across five sizes, down to XS format to isolate a subject behind a cluttered foreground.
Video
4K and 8K Without Compromise
The α7R VI records in 4K 60p and 4K 120p with no crop, using 4:2:2 10-bit color sampling for reference-grade image quality in production. 8K 30p recording in XAVC HS format with 8.2K oversampling delivers spectacular resolution suited to the most demanding productions, also in 4:2:2 10-bit.
Dual Gain Recording fully exploits the sensor's tonal range for detailed shadows, low noise, and smooth gradations, offering wide latitude for correction in post-production. The S-Log3 gamma curve preserves gradations for professional color grading, with support for S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine color spaces.
Audio
The camera integrates digital audio processing to reduce background noise, wind noise, and lens mechanical noise, whether using an internal or external microphone. The optional XLR adapter enables recording at 96 kHz in 32-bit floating point via the multi-interface shoe, delivering exceptional dynamic range and maximum flexibility in editing.
Video Stabilization
The upgraded stabilization unit doubles the compensation range for roll movement during handheld shooting. Dynamic Active Mode provides an additional 30% compensation for stable handheld footage without a tripod. Breathing Compensation reduces angle-of-view fluctuations during focusing, and can also be applied in post-production.
Efficiency and Reliability
Anti-flicker shooting prevents exposure and color inconsistencies under artificial lighting, with dedicated management of high-frequency LED sources. Focus Bracketing automatically captures up to 299 images at progressive focus distances, allowing selection of the sharpest frame or focus stacking in post-production for extreme depth of field. Full Time DMF allows instant switching between autofocus and manual focus simply by turning the lens focus ring.
