Description
The Sony FE 100-400mm F4.5 GM OSS is built for professional photographers and videographers operating in demanding conditions: wildlife, birding, sports, photojournalism. It combines G Master optical quality, ultra-fast autofocus, and robust construction in a remarkably light form factor for its class.
Optical Quality
The optical formula incorporates an XA ED element, combining extreme aspherical and ultra-low dispersion glass, alongside XA, Super ED, and ED lenses. Together, they correct chromatic and spherical aberrations across the full 100-400mm zoom range, with a constant maximum aperture of F4.5 from start to finish. This design produces high resolution across the entire image plane and the smooth, natural bokeh characteristic of G Master lenses. The focal range is extendable to 800mm with a compatible teleconverter.
Autofocus
Four XD linear motors drive the floating lens groups for autofocus up to three times faster and subject tracking improved by 50% over the previous generation. Paired with the α9 III body, the lens tracks moving subjects reliably at burst rates up to 120 frames per second. Reduced focus breathing and axial shift during zooming ensures smooth footage suited to professional video production.
Handling
Despite its class, the lens weighs only 1,840g thanks to magnesium alloy components and a carefully optimized internal design. The internal zoom mechanism keeps the lens length constant throughout the zoom range, limiting center-of-gravity shift and easing handling during extended shooting sessions. The zoom ring torque has been specifically tuned for smooth and precise operation.
Control and Stabilization
The built-in optical stabilization works in synergy with the in-body stabilization of compatible Sony cameras for optimal results. A customizable function ring allows storing and instantly recalling a specific focus point, a particularly useful feature for sports and wildlife shooting. A switch enables quick toggling between full-frame and APS-C crop mode, providing an additional 1.5x apparent zoom through motorized focusing. A zoom smoothness switch and a focus hold button round out the available controls.
Reliability
The construction is fully dust and moisture resistant. The front element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, and oils, while making field cleaning quick and easy.
