The Legendary Photographer Annie Leibovitz Creates a Book to Match Her Stature
When Benedikt Taschen asks the foremost portrait photographer of our time to bring together her photographs in a SUMO-sized book, Annie Leibovitz is intrigued and accepts the challenge. It takes several years for the project to come to fruition. Drawing on more than 40 years of work, Leibovitz selects photographs ranging from the intimate reportage she produced for Rolling Stone in the 1970s to the sophisticated portraits she created for Vanity Fair and Vogue. Iconic images, such as the photograph of John Lennon and Yoko Ono locked in a final embrace, appear alongside rarely published and, in some cases, previously unseen portraits. Her photographs are both intimate and iconic. Frequently imitated but never equalled, Leibovitz moves effortlessly between genres, always in a style unmistakably her own. Renowned for her group portraits, she presents them for the first time in a format that allows them to be appreciated at their true scale, reaffirming her position as the undisputed master of the genre.
Leibovitz's collection opens with a black-and-white photograph of Richard Nixon's helicopter taking off from the White House following his resignation in 1974, followed by the official portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in a drawing room at Buckingham Palace in 2007. Throughout the book, portraits of actors, dancers, comedians, musicians, artists, writers, journalists, athletes and business leaders form a family album of our times, with performance and power emerging as recurring themes. An accompanying volume contains essays by Annie Leibovitz, Graydon Carter, Paul Roth and Hans Ulrich Obrist, as well as explanatory notes on each of the 250 photographs.
The edition is limited to 10,000 numbered copies, each signed by Annie Leibovitz.
