A fast wide angle that shares all the attributes of Voigtlander’s new generation of lenses, the F1.8/21mm M mount Ultron yields photographs of outstanding contrast and superior sharpness. With 13 elements in 11 groups (including an aspherical element), it produces images low in all types of aberration.
Despite the wide field of view, shooting at maximum aperture provides a shallow depth of field. Voigtlander is boasting about this Ultron’s pleasing bokeh, no doubt contributed to by the inclusion of a 10-bladed diaphragm. The metal barrel and manual-focusing helicoid insure long-lasting durability and smooth, precise focusing. The lens design incorporates a non-detachable hood. Tipping the scales at 412g, the Voigtlander Ultron F1.8/21mm is no featherweight, but can still be easily carried for prolonged periods of time. (The Leica Summilux-M 21mm F1.4 ASPH is heftier at 580g.) If you are interested in street and travel photography under a broad range of lighting conditions, this Voigtlander should be given serious consideration.
Cosina has emerged as an admired producer of top quality optics. The rangefinder lenses are prime examples of applying modern design and production techniques to produce a lineup of unprecedented ingenuity and quality. From the 12mm Heliar to the 90mm Apo Lanthar, Voigtlander lenses have turned what was once considered impossible, into the routine. All the lenses have aperture indentations calibrated in 1/2-stop intervals, and all share pricing that is truly a bargain.
