Description
Evolving Montreal
Street photographer Robert Walker has been chosen to inaugurate Evolving Montreal, a series of commmissions initiated by the McCord Museum to support documentary photography projects that capture the transformation of various Montreal neighbourhoods from unique perspectives. Over the course of 2018-2019 Walker photogrpahed Griffintown, a district currently in the throes of a vast urban development project. Dominated by brightly coloured construction equipment and seductive property development posters, the neighbourhood has proved perfectly suited to Walker's distinctive style. Through his lens, Griffintown becomes a stage on which traces of past and present confront one another in a dynamic play of colour, line and pattern. The new face of Griffintown, one of Montreal's oldest and most mythical neighborhoods, emerges through an incongruous melding of industrial, working-class roots and an anticipated upscale future.
