Description
The World Away from the World
The Balkans are not a place one simply visits. The social climate quickly strips away your guard and draws you into a world of rawness and sincerity. A frank stare becomes an invitation; a conversation begins before words are spoken. This is how it starts.
The Balkans are a land of rhythm and rupture, resilience and grace - hard and tender in the same breath.
The photographs in this book are not the result of a project or a thesis. They are the outcome of time lived - in villages and cities, fields and borderlands - between 1993 and 2023. Shot on film, in black and white and in color, these images arise from a quiet observation of life as it unfolded: peasants laboring under the sun, the bohemian drift of the Tzigan, a window ajar, a distant dog barking. The patina of time settling over everything.
There is no spectacle here. Nothing was staged. These are simply moments - unvarnished, unposed, deeply felt. They offer no answers. They are only what they are: fragments of life in the Balkans.
