The name "Mandler" is a tribute to Walter Mandler, the German-Canadian engineer who designed more than 45 Leica lenses at Ernst Leitz Canada (ELCAN) and who is a near-mythical figure among fans of the German brand.
The first Mandler lens, officially released in February 2025, is the "7-Elements" 35mm f/2, a replica of the famous Leica Summicron 35mm f/2 version 4, nicknamed the "King of Bokeh" (produced between 1979 and 1999). It offers very good build quality, a rendering close to the original, and center sharpness slightly better than the real Summicron!
Inspired by the classic optical structure, the Mandler 35mm f/2 combines contemporary precision manufacturing to create an optical product that blends traditional aesthetics with modern performance. It delivers high-level performance in color accuracy, flare control, and overall optical consistency, which not only reflects the reliability of its classic optical design but also represents the advancement of modern optical manufacturing technology. The launch of this lens aims to break the traditional notion that high quality must come with a high price, offering photographers a choice that balances optical excellence with affordability.
