Description
Edward Hillel’s 1987 book The Main remains one of the most celebrated and successful photobooks ever to turn its lens on our fair city and its iconic thoroughfare. Part introspection, part memoir, and part photographic essay, the book captured the cultural heartbeat of the neighbourhood through poignant, heartwarming stories and anecdotes that brought readers closer to its people and places.
Have you ever wondered what might happen if a novel were rewritten by the same author some 35 years later, revisiting its plot and characters with fresh eyes and the perspective of time? A few years ago, Edward was commissioned to do just that: to return to the neighbourhood and tell the story of today.
But this was far more than a simple revisit by a local photographer. Since the publication of The Main, Edward had moved to Paris, met the woman who would become his wife, and later settled in New York, where he now lives. Carrying nostalgia and memory with him, he spent weeks rediscovering old paths, piecing together the past and present.
Shot over several visits to Montréal across a number of years, Holding the Main (Tendre la Main en français) is a new oeuvre that both builds upon and completes the story that began nearly forty years ago. Bilingual and beautifully produced and printed, it is a heartfelt homage to Montréal and to the many colourful threads that make the city such a singular tapestry.
