Description

Stock Photo Agency
A History of Photojournalism in Quebec
Collective under the direction of Sophie Bertrand and Jocelyne Fournel

Les Éditions du Passage

In 1987, three young photographers decided to found a photography agency. Like major press agencies such as Reuters or AFP, Robert Fréchette, Jean-François LeBlanc and Martin Roy created an independent and collective structure still unprecedented in Quebec.

For more than thirty years, Stock will cover the major events that have shaped Quebec society. From the 1995 Referendum to the Spring Fire, the photographers brought a variety of perspectives on social, political and cultural issues that have marked the history of Quebec. Published in the largest national and international French-language newspapers, their images have shaped our eyes and our collective memory.

More than 100 documentary photographs in black and white and color make up this book according to major themes: Referendum on the sovereignty of Quebec, Resistance of Kanehsatà:ke (or Oka crisis), Summit of the Americas in Quebec City, Maple Spring, Montreal, the night and hunting and fishing. It includes the work of photographers Oscar Aguirre, Benoit Aquin, Josué Bertolino, Normand Blouin, Robert Fréchette, Laurent Guérin, Caroline Hayeur, Jean-François LeBlanc, Miguel Legault, Horacio Paone, Martin Roy, Jean-Eudes Schurr, Marie-Hélène Tremblay and Sophie Bertrand.

The book includes an introduction by author and photographer Sophie Bertrand, as well as a text by photography historian Vincent Lavoie and two major interviews with photographers Jean-François LeBlanc and Caroline Hayeur.

A beautiful book that offers a summary of Quebec's history, and a true tribute to Quebec and Quebecers!
