From Point Pelee in southern Ontario to Queen Maud Gulf in Nunavut, there is a buzz among birders anticipating the arrival of their fair-feathered friends. From now on, they will better tell bobolinks from bobwhites, flycatchers from gnatcatchers and sapsuckers from titmice. Leica has significantly raised the bar in spotting scopes with their line of Apo-Televids.
Both the 65 and 82 scopes are offered in versions with either straight or angled sights. The APO designation is what makes them king of the hill, offering high-definition glass (glass with fluorite that both provides outstanding contrast in any light and eliminates color fringing), plus apochromatic lenses (lenses that focus all primary colors on one point). This provides still greater sharpness and contrast, and truly neutral colour reproduction. They are outfitted with the scintillating Vario-Ocular 25-50X WW ASPH eyepiece with its subjective field of 60º.
The scopes are not merely updated from the previous generation. There are 200 innovations in their new designs. They are watertight to 5 metres, sport rubber armor to repel bumps and scrapes, use an improved tripod foot and lens hood and, most importantly, employ a truly innovative step forward in focusing. The focusing knob is not symmetrical, but is larger in the back. This larger portion controls gross focus, while the smaller front controls the fine focus. In practice, focusing is easy, quick and precise. Use the back to rack through great distances and slide to the front to critically adjust the sharpness.
The APO-Televid 82 spotting scope is engineered for the most discerning specialist and aficionado, bringing nature up close at the highest resolution.
